CAIR, Expert Witnesses to Requirements of Christian Faith?

On January 7, 2004, the Council on American Islamic Relations, (CAIR), issued an American Muslim New Brief concerning a meeting between CAIR officials and the French ambassador to the United States, Mr. Jean-David Levitte.  CAIR representatives presented a letter, to be delivered to French President Jacques Chirac, explaining CAIR’s objection to a ban on head scarves in public schools.

     CAIR's letter read, in part:

"Unlike a cross, which is not an obligation for Christians to wear, hijabs, yarmulkes and turbans are not "symbols" that can be removed without abandoning religious responsibilities. Rather, hijab is a religious obligation and for many French women, any ban on a woman's right to freely exercise her faith by wearing hijab may be seen as an indirect prohibition on Islam in France...”

CAIR has been remiss in failing to take into account the religiously-based requirements of both the Mennonites and Amish that they dress conservatively.  Both the Mennonites and the Amish are well known for their head coverings and austere clothing.

ACAIR cautions the French ambassador:  The Council on American Islamic Relations is believed to be a fundamentalist Islamic group that we believe does not represent the majority of Muslims in the United States or Canada.  We believe that for France to take advice from CAIR is no different than the NAACP taking advice from the Ku Klux Klan.

ACAIR is pleased to answer any questions from the public and press.
